Liberia: House Urges NEC to Conduct By-Election for Vacant Nimba Seat

Must read

The House of Representatives has officially called on the National Elections Commission (NEC) to organize a by-election for a vacant seat in the 55th National Legislature, following the recent election of Representative Samuel G. Kogar from Electoral District 5 in Nimba County.

This marks the third by-election in Nimba County since the presidential and legislative elections held in 2023.

In a letter dated May 26, 2025, and signed by Chief Clerk Mildred N. Sayon, the House notified NEC Chairperson Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah of the vacancy.

The correspondence underscores the necessity to act in accordance with legal protocols established by the Liberian Constitution.

According to Article 37 of the 1986 Constitution, when a vacancy occurs in the Legislature due to reasons such as death, resignation or expulsion, the presiding officer must inform the Elections Commission within 30 days.

Subsequently, the NEC is mandated to conduct a by-election within 90 days unless the vacancy arises within 90 days prior to general elections, in which case the position will remain unfilled until those elections.

The House’s request highlights the urgency for the NEC to fulfill its constitutional duties, ensuring that the representation of Nimba County is restored promptly.

As the NEC prepares to take the necessary steps, residents of Nimba County are looking forward to the upcoming elections, eager to ensure their voices are heard in the national legislature.

The upcoming by-election is expected to attract significant interest from both local and national political parties, as well as from voters poised to influence the future representation of their district.
