Liberia: Concerned Nimba Women Rally Against Senator Nya Twayen’s Campaign Against ArcelorMittal Expansion

Must read

Concerned Women of Nimba County have distanced themselves from the political agenda of Senator Nya Twayen, criticizing what they termed his disruptive campaign against ArcelorMittal Liberia Phase II Expansion Project.

In a press statement shared with the Oracle News Daily. the women, representing mothers, daughters, sisters, and caretakers, voiced their frustrations over what they describe as a reckless spread of misinformation and political agitation detrimental to their community’s economic well-being.

The statement highlights the harsh realities faced by the women of Nimba County, who endure poverty, joblessness, and the uncertainty of their families’ futures. They expressed disappointment that a leader entrusted with their hopes would vocally oppose a company that has significantly contributed to local employment and economic development.

“Senator Twayen’s statements on social media and radio are not only divisive and misleading, but they are also dangerous,” the statement reads. The women stressed that ArcelorMittal’s continued investment in the region is critical to the livelihoods of thousands, including single mothers and young professionals who depend on the mining industry.

While recognizing that ArcelorMittal is not without flaws and that grievances exist, the Concerned Women emphasized the importance of dialogue and collaboration in addressing community concerns.

They contrasted Twayen’s actions with those of local leaders, such as Superintendent Kou Gono, who welcomed the investment while holding the company accountable for its commitments—a model of responsible leadership they believe should be emulated.

The women cited significant benefits already brought to their community by ArcelorMittal, including the Ganta–Yekepa Road project, scholarships, and local business support, reaffirming their stance that progress should be achieved through constructive engagement rather than political theatrics.

In their statement, the Concerned Women of Nimba County made a clear call to action:

– They condemned Senator Twayen’s comments as harmful to the economic needs of the community.

– They acknowledged ArcelorMittal’s contributions while demanding more targeted benefits for women, youth, and vulnerable populations.

– They endorsed President Joseph Boakai’s message of unity and constructive dialogue while urging local leaders to collaboratively seek the best outcomes from the investment.

The women declared, “We want more from ArcelorMittal Liberia, but we want it through peaceful negotiations, not provocation.” They urged all stakeholders to prioritize the welfare of Nimba’s families over personal or political ambitions, promising that their voices—echoing the needs and hopes of their community—will not go unheard.
