Liberia: Veep Koung Lauds China’s Tariff Policy as Reliable Support for Economic Growth

Must read

Liberia’s Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung has expressed his country’s gratitude for China’s steadfast support and strong tariff policy, characterizing Beijing as a “reliable friend” for Liberia’s economic journey.

During a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the Fourth China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo, Koung emphasized the positive impacts of China’s zero-tariff policy on African nations, highlighting its role in bolstering Liberia’s economy.

Koung’s remarks came on the heels of Liberia’s election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council—a moment a recognized by Minister Wang, who reaffirmed China’s commitment to multilateralism and representation of the interests of developing countries.

The relationship between China and Liberia has deepened significantly in recent years, driven by mutual economic and political interests.

“China’s long-term, selfless support and zero-tariff policy for African countries have brought significant benefits to Liberia,” Koung stated.

He expressed a shared vision with China for collaboration in various sectors, including maritime affairs, green energy, healthcare, and agriculture, which are critical for Liberia’s development goals.

In a broader strategic context, The Vice President reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to the one-China principle and pledged ongoing support for China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, aligning Liberia’s diplomatic efforts with Beijing’s foreign policy approach.

However, this flourishing relationship stands in stark contrast to Liberia’s dealings with the United States, which has implemented more protectionist tariffs.

Koung emphasized a commitment to work collaboratively with China to achieve common prosperity, signaling a clear strategic choice for engagement that prioritizes economic growth through trade-friendly policies.
