The National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL) honored twenty deserving Liberian students with scholarships aimed at supporting their undergraduate studies in various disciplines across the country. This initiative is part of NOCAL’s Corporate Social Responsibility Education Initiatives program.

During the award ceremony, NOCAL’s Acting President and CEO, Fabian Michael Lai, emphasized that this scholarship initiative signifies much more than just financial support; it is a strategic investment in Liberia’s human capital. “As we explore and develop our oil and gas resources, we must be equally engaged in nurturing the boundless potential of our youth,” he explained.

Lai highlighted that the true wealth of nations in the 21st century is measured not just by the natural resources they possess, but by the quality of their human resources. He stated, “At NOCAL, we recognize that while Liberia is rich in petroleum, our greatest asset lies in the intellectual capacity and innovative spirit of our people.”

The NOCAL CEO also reiterated the importance of aligning with national development priorities. The company’s 2025 program has been carefully crafted to support the ARREST Agenda, particularly focusing on the “E” for Education, which serves as a foundation for all other developmental pillars. He affirmed the commitment to creating opportunities for talented Liberians, irrespective of their economic backgrounds.

In regard to local content development, Lai stressed that NOCAL aims to ensure that Liberians are not only participants but also leaders within the emerging energy sector. He noted that this year’s scholarship selection process was the most competitive to date, with 191 applications received from all 15 counties, reflecting an increasing awareness and confidence in the program.

The selection process included a rigorous three-phase evaluation that assessed not only academic credentials but also character through recommendations and aptitude testing, which evaluated critical thinking skills beyond the classroom. Lai expressed pride in maintaining gender equity throughout the selection process, with 33% of the scholarships awarded to young women.

To the new scholars, Lai remarked, “The contract you will sign today is more than a scholarship; it’s a commitment to your nation.” He urged the recipients to maintain exemplary academic performance, engage in community service and mentorship, and aspire to become innovators and thought leaders. “You are now ambassadors of this program and of NOCAL’s vision; your conduct will influence the future of this initiative,” he added.

Lai also announced that NOCAL intends to increase both the number and value of scholarship awards while developing structured mentorship opportunities between current and past scholarship recipients and creating internship pathways with partners in the energy sector.

In response to receiving the scholarship, Mariama Keita, a representative of the awarded students, expressed gratitude on behalf of her peers. “As I move forward, I carry not only the scholarship but also a responsibility to serve my country with the knowledge I will gain,” she stated.

The scholarship recipients collectively pledged to work diligently to achieve the required academic standards and uphold the values associated with their new roles.
