Liberia: Second Subsea Cable For Five West African Countries

Must read

Liberia’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications has launched a collaborative initiative with the ECOWAS Commission for Infrastructure, Energy, and Digitalization and the World Bank to deploy a second subsea cable connecting Liberia and four other West African countries.

According to a ministry press release issued last week, the “Second Submarine Cable Project” is designed to provide essential connectivity for Liberia, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

The project is also intended to establish redundancy for the region’s connectivity, as each of the five countries currently have only one international subsea connection via the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) cable.

The ECOWAS Commission’s Project Preparation and Development Unit (PPDU) contracted telecoms consulting firm TACTIS to conduct a thorough feasibility study for the cable, which was completed on Friday.

By deploying this second cable, the project will enhance the digital infrastructure of all five countries, ensuring reliable and resilient internet access for millions of citizens, the ministry said.
