Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighé, Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Liberia Maritime Authority implore graduates of the Tubman University in Maryland County to embrace the weighty responsibility of shaping industries, transforming communities, and influencing national policy.
Addressing the Class of 2025, Lighé emphasized that education is not merely a credential but a tool for visionary leadership.
“Your education is the brush, and your vision for the future is the color,” he said. “What you paint with the brush will reflect your talents, your discipline, and your courage to dream without limits,” he said.
The Maritime Chief urged graduates to see themselves as agents of change, stressing that those who have driven societal progress are individuals who persevere through adversity with discipline and commitment. “Self-doubt kills more dreams than failure,” Lighé warned, encouraging students to remain focused, positive, and motivated even in the face of challenges.
The Commissioner challenged the graduates to think beyond academic achievement and pursue knowledge with purpose. “Seek knowledge not only to pass exams but to solve problems and take initiative,” he said. “Liberia and the world need problem-solvers and opportunity-creators.”
Lighé underscored the importance of applying education to real-world issues, particularly in fields like engineering, where graduates can play a critical role in addressing Liberia’s infrastructure challenges.
He called on students to commit deeply to their studies in order to become intuitive and effective professionals.
Drawing from the maritime sector, Lighé offered a vivid metaphor: “A ship is safe in harbor, but that is not what ships are built for.” He likened graduates to ships built to navigate turbulent waters, asserting that true purpose is found in venturing beyond comfort zones.
“Let your time at Tubman University be the season when your vision takes root, your potential blossoms, and your contribution to humanity begins to take shape,” he stated.
The ceremony marked a defining moment for the university’s newest alumni, who now step into a world in need of bold leadership and transformative action.
