The University of Liberia has unveiled a comprehensive development agenda following the $40 million allocation in the 2026 draft National Budget, submitted by the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning to the 55th Legislature.
According to UL’s administration, the funding will support major infrastructure upgrades across its campuses. Planned projects include:
Installation of solar energy systems to improve power supply
Rehabilitation of water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities; provision of campus-wide internet access, digitization of administrative and academic systems: Renovation and revitalization of buildings, including repairs, routine maintenance, and landscaping.
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Layli Maparyan, UL is also prioritizing academic excellence and faculty development. Key initiatives include Expanding the number of faculty members with Ph.D. or other terminal degrees, supported by competitive compensation packages, establishing international partnerships to help Master’s-level faculty advance to terminal degrees, increasing faculty research output through scholarly publications, grant proposals, and innovation-driven projects such as the Liberia UniPOD.
Modernizing curricula across disciplines, including restructuring academic departments and programs where necessary.
Transforming the Division of Student Affairs into a Division of Student Success, aimed at enhancing student support services.
UL’s agenda reflects a dual focus on infrastructure and academic advancement, positioning the institution to strengthen its role as Liberia’s flagship public university. The administration emphasized that the initiatives are designed to improve teaching, research, and student outcomes while aligning with national development priorities.
