Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Authority (LMHRA) Managing Director on January 9 toured the construction site of a pharmaceutical and medical waste disposal facility, part of efforts to strengthen public health regulation and environmental safety.

The project features a modern incinerator and office complex designed to improve LMHRA’s capacity to safely dispose of expired, substandard, and hazardous medical products in line with international standards.

Speaking during the visit, the Managing Director described the initiative as a critical investment in Liberia’s health system, noting that improper disposal of medical waste poses serious risks to public health and environmental protection.

The project is fully funded by the Global Fund, with implementation support from Plan International Liberia. Construction is progressing steadily, with completion expected next month.

Once operational, the facility will serve as a national hub for safe disposal of regulated medical and pharmaceutical waste, marking a milestone in LMHRA’s mandate to safeguard public health and ensure the quality and efficacy of medicines across Liberia.
