The Liberia National Police working with the Joint Security in Nimba County has arrested 23 individuals in connection with alleged illegal possession and discharge of firearms in Tappita District.
The arrests followed multiple complaints from residents of New Toe’s Town and Unification Town, who reported that armed men were seen in nearby bushes firing single-barrel guns, killing cattle, and seizing personal belongings. Concerned by the escalating threat, the Joint Security convened an emergency meeting and resolved to launch a fact-finding operation in the affected communities.
During the operation, security forces apprehended 23 suspects believed to be linked to the reported incidents. Authorities also confiscated ten single-barrel guns, eight cutlasses, and five empty shells allegedly used in the activities. The suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue to determine the full scope of the matter.
Police officials emphasized that the arrests underscore the government’s commitment to curbing illegal arms possession and safeguarding rural communities. “The Liberia National Police remain dedicated to maintaining peace, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that anyone found in violation of the law is brought to justice,” the LNP said in a statement.
Residents of Tappita District have long expressed concerns about the proliferation of small arms and the risks posed to farming communities. Local leaders welcomed the swift intervention, noting that unchecked firearm use threatens both livelihoods and public safety.
The LNP has urged citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with security authorities by reporting suspicious activities. Officials stressed that community engagement is vital to preventing violence and ensuring accountability.
Illegal possession of firearms remains a pressing challenge in Liberia, particularly in rural counties where traditional hunting practices sometimes blur the line between lawful and unlawful weapon use.
