The Government of Liberia says it has begun deploying troops and joint security forces to the disputed border region with Guinea after nearly a week of reported aggressive actions by Guinean soldiers, including alleged cross border entries and the raising of Guinea’s flag on Liberian soil.

In a statement Thursday, Monrovia said diplomatic channels remain active — both bilaterally and through regional bodies such as the Mano River Union and ECOWAS — even as security forces are being positioned to stabilize the frontier.

A High level Liberian delegation is due to travel to Conakry within 24 hours to continue talks, the ministry said.

The National Security Council, chaired by President Joseph Boakai has been meeting regularly on the situation and briefed leaders of both houses of the National Legislature on Wednesday, March 11.

Authorities also said joint security units have been deployed to Foya in Lofa County to maintain order and prevent escalation.

Liberian officials are investigating a shooting on March 11 that left a Liberian citizen wounded.

The government says the injured person is in stable condition and receiving treatment.

Reports from the border community accuse Guinean troops of opening fire during recent incidents. Liberian authorities are treating those accounts as part of ongoing inquiries.

The government urged residents of border communities to remain calm and law abiding and to cooperate with security personnel.

Officials warned against the spread of misinformation that could inflame tensions and undermine national security.
