The Liberia National Tourism Authority (LNTA) has launched a nationwide campaign with the aim of formalizing the tourism sector in Liberia.

This campaign, which was launched through a high-profile roadshow in Monrovia, targets improving business registration, service standards, and compliance in Liberia’s tourism sector. This marks a new approach towards a more structured and results-based approach in Liberia’s tourism sector, with the establishment of the LNTA as a standalone organization with the aim of regulating and promoting the tourism sector in Liberia, as outlined in the 2025 Liberia National Tourism Act.

As a result, tourism businesses, which include hotels, travel agencies, entertainment outlets, and car rentals, are expected to register within the next 90 days. This will be a requirement for the formalization of the tourism sector in Liberia, with non-compliant businesses risking closure as a result of failing to comply with this requirement.

Tourism Authority Chief Thanasis Kontogeorgis emphasized that the primary objective of this campaign is to raise service standards across the tourism sector. The initiative encourages tourism businesses, including hotels, travel agencies, and car rental services, to register and comply with industry regulations, creating a more structured and professional environment. This move aims to ensure that Liberia’s tourist destinations provide high-quality services to meet international standards, thereby making the country more competitive in the global tourism market.

Improved service standards will contribute to tourism growth, as higher-quality experiences will attract international visitors seeking luxury travel, cultural immersion, and unique experiences. This initiative will help build consumer trust in the country’s tourism products and encourage repeat visitors and new tourism markets.

After the successful Monrovia launch, the campaign will expand to Bomi, Grand Bassa, and Grand Cape Mount counties, targeting emerging tourism destinations and key tourism corridors. By formalizing tourism operations across the country, the tourism growth strategy will help promote lesser-known regions and attract more domestic and international travelers to explore areas outside the capital. This regional tourism development will ensure economic opportunities reach local communities and foster sustainable tourism growth in rural areas.

As tourist arrivals increase in regions like Grand Bassa and Grand Cape Mount, the initiative will support local businesses, create job opportunities, and promote the development of tourist facilities such as eco-lodges, cultural centers, and local markets. This will distribute tourism benefits more equally across the country and ensure long-term economic sustainability.
