A high-level delegation led by the Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA), Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr., has held strategic talks with Egypt’s Ambassador to Liberia, Ahmed Abdelazeem Farghaly, aimed at strengthening maritime cooperation between the two nations.
The meeting, convened at the Egyptian Embassy near Monrovia, focused on establishing a structured framework for collaboration that leverages Egypt’s maritime expertise and Liberia’s global standing as the leading flag state by deadweight tonnage.
Ambassador Farghaly underscored the importance of both countries in global trade, calling for closer cooperation in maritime governance, security, and technical development. He welcomed the Liberian delegation and emphasized Egypt’s readiness to share its experience in managing critical shipping routes.
Commissioner Lighe described Egypt as a “maritime giant” and reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to building stronger ties. He noted that Liberia is eager to benefit from Egypt’s advanced infrastructure and training institutions to enhance LiMA’s operational capacity.
Key areas of potential cooperation include partnerships linked to the Suez Canal, expanded bilateral engagement, technical assistance, and capacity building. The collaborative framework is also expected to cover port services, economic zones, and the safety and security of vessels operating under Liberia’s flag.
The talks reflect Liberia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its maritime capabilities through strategic international partnerships. With Egypt managing one of the world’s most vital shipping corridors, the partnership could provide Liberia with new opportunities to expand its influence in global maritime affairs while improving domestic capacity.
Analysts say the initiative highlights Liberia’s determination to diversify its maritime partnerships beyond traditional allies, positioning the country to benefit from Egypt’s technical know-how and institutional experience.
As discussions progress, both sides are expected to formalize agreements that will not only enhance maritime cooperation but also contribute to broader economic and security objectives. The outcome could mark a significant step in Liberia’s quest to modernize its maritime sector and reinforce its role in international shipping.
