Jefferson Tamba Koijee, national secretary general of Liberia’s main opposition Congress for Democratic Change and former mayor of Monrovia, publicly paid tribute to former U.S. President Donald J. Trump on the occasion of Trump’s 80th birthday.
In a statement coinciding with U.S. Flag Day, Koijee underscored Trump’s contributions to Liberia, the African continent, and global peace and stability.
As the world marks Trump’s milestone birthday, Koijee noted that it presented “a unique and meaningful coincidence” with Flag Day, a symbol of U.S. national pride and resilience.
Koijee praised Trump for renewing attention towards trade, investment, and economic engagement between the United States and Africa during his presidency.
Trump’s administration made a number of high-profile gestures toward the continent, seeking to reshape U.S.-Africa policy. In 2018, the Trump hosted African leaders—including Liberia’s then-President George Weah—reaffirming American commitment to diplomatic ties originating from Liberia’s historical connections with the U.S. and again in 2025.
Koijee recalled this period as carrying “special significance” for Liberia’s ongoing relationship with Washington.
On trade, Trump’s government launched the “Prosper Africa” initiative, a multi-agency effort to boost business and investment links. The administration also signed trade agreements meant to advance U.S. commercial interests and strengthen African economies.
On governance and peace, the Trump administration advocated for self-reliance and partnerships based on mutual benefit, and often pressed African nations on anti-corruption and rule of law reforms.
Globally, Koijee said, Trump’s tenure shaped major conversations on economic development and peace. Though often the subject of controversy, Trump’s policies—including renewed diplomatic outreach and efforts against transnational threats—“continue to be felt across borders,” Koijee said.
