The National Public Health Institute of Liberia reported one confirmed yellow fever case in a 50-year-old male from Polar Town, Gbao health district in Grand Gedah County on June 22.
The patient presented with symptoms of jaundice, fever and headache in late May.
Confirmation for yellow fever was performed at Institut Pasteur in Dakar, Senegal on June 16.
The patient had a history of travel to Gbarzon Jarwodee community forest in Gbao health district for farming.
He was vaccinated against yellow fever in 2009.
Liberia reported two confirmed yellow fever cases and no deaths last year.
Yellow fever is a severe viral disease with jaundice and hemorrhagic manifestations that is spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes.
Symptoms of yellow fever include fever, chills, headache, backache, and muscle aches, and develop 3–6 days after infection. About 15% of people infected with yellow fever virus will develop severe illness that can lead to liver disease, bleeding, shock, organ failure, yellowing skin and eyes (jaundice), and sometimes death.
Yellow fever vaccine is the best protection against this disease.
