Fellow Liberians,
Today, as we commemorate the 179th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Liberia, we honor the courage, vision, and sacrifices of those who founded Africa’s first independent republic on July 26, 1847. This is a day of reflection, gratitude, and renewed commitment to the ideals of freedom, justice, equality, and national unity upon which our Republic was established.
Independence Day is more than a celebration of our sovereignty. It is an opportunity for every Liberian to honestly examine the state of our nation and ask ourselves whether we are fulfilling the promise of Liberia for present and future generations.
This year’s celebration comes at a difficult moment in our national journey. Our country continues to face serious economic hardship, growing unemployment, rising poverty, and increasing public frustration over governance and accountability. More troubling is the recent wave of major drug seizures and allegations involving organized narcotics trafficking. These developments have cast an unfortunate shadow over our international reputation and remind us that the fight against transnational crime requires integrity, professionalism, and unwavering political will.
The proliferation of illicit drugs threatens not only our national security but also the future of our young people. We must never allow Liberia to become a safe haven or transit point for criminal networks that exploit our institutions and endanger our citizens. Every public official entrusted with the responsibility of protecting our nation must discharge that duty with honesty, courage, and fidelity to the Constitution and the laws of Liberia.
At the same time, we must resist the temptation to allow our political differences to divide us. Liberia belongs to all Liberians—not to one political party, one tribe, one region, or one generation. Whether we support the government or stand in opposition, our shared responsibility is to place the national interest above personal ambition and partisan loyalty.
I reaffirm my commitment to constructive engagement. Holding government accountable is not an act of hostility; it is an act of patriotism. Democracy flourishes when citizens speak truth to power, when institutions operate independently, and when justice is administered fairly without fear or favor.
I encourage every Liberian to remain hopeful despite our challenges. Our history teaches us that this nation has survived civil conflict, disease outbreaks, economic crises, and political instability. Each time, the resilience of the Liberian people has carried us forward. I believe we can once again rise above our present difficulties if we embrace integrity, transparency, accountability, and genuine national reconciliation.
On this Independence Day, let us also remember our security personnel, healthcare workers, teachers, farmers, market women, students, religious leaders, civil servants, entrepreneurs, members of the Liberian diaspora, and every hardworking citizen whose daily sacrifices continue to sustain our nation.
Above all, let us pray for Liberia. Let us pray for wisdom for our leaders, strength for our institutions, opportunities for our youth, peace in our communities, and prosperity for every family. May God guide us to make decisions that will strengthen our democracy and secure a better future for generations yet unborn.
As we celebrate 179 years of independence, let us renew our pledge to build a Liberia where justice is not selective, where opportunity is available to all, where corruption is confronted without compromise, and where every citizen can live with dignity and hope.
