Lofa County — A wave of celebration swept through Zorzor District as Lofa County University (LCU) officially opened its Annex 1 campus in Fissebu Town, marking a historic expansion of higher education in northern Liberia.
The new campus, born from a May 2026 Memorandum of Understanding that transferred the former Change Agent Network University (CAN U) to the Government of Liberia, represents a powerful step toward bridging the education gap for rural students.
The opening ceremony drew a vibrant crowd of government officials, traditional leaders, students, women’s groups, and residents from Zorzor, Salayea, and neighboring communities. The atmosphere was electric with hope and pride.
Minister of Local Government Francis Sakila Nyumalin hailed the annex as a breakthrough for rural education. “This establishment will benefit not only Zorzor and Salayea but also students from Bong and Gbarpolu counties,” he declared, pledging support and donating 200 bags of cement for future infrastructure.
Representing Finance Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, Assistant Finance Minister for Budget Sarah M. Mulbah officially dedicated the campus, reaffirming government commitment to strengthening public higher education nationwide.
LCU President Dr. Isaac P. Podah emphasized that the annex was a direct response to community appeals for affordable education closer to home. He expressed gratitude to CAN U proprietor Eric Woiwor, whose donation of facilities valued at over US$400,000 made the expansion possible. “No qualified Liberian should be denied access to higher education because of distance or financial hardship,” Dr. Podah stressed.
With more than 500 students expected to enroll in the upcoming semester, the Annex 1 campus promises to reduce travel costs, expand opportunities, and fuel community development. For many families, it is more than a school—it is a lifeline to a brighter future.
As the sun set over Fissebu Town, the message was clear: Lofa County University’s bold expansion is not just about classrooms and cement—it is about hope, opportunity, and the unstoppable march of progress in Liberia’s rural heartland.
