The Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) has awarded five prestigious scholarships to Liberian students for advanced studies at Shanghai Maritime University, one of the world’s foremost institutions for shipping and transport education.

The recipients — three male and two female — were selected through a rigorous, independent vetting process and will depart Liberia on September 9, 2026, to begin specialized training in maritime studies. Their selection underscores LiMA’s determination to cultivate a new generation of highly skilled professionals capable of driving Liberia’s maritime transformation.

The scholarships stem from a landmark Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2025 between LiMA and Shanghai Maritime University. A cornerstone of the agreement is the provision of academic opportunities for talented Liberians to pursue advanced degrees and technical expertise in the maritime industry.

Shanghai Maritime University enjoys global recognition as a leader in maritime education, research, and professional training. Its programs are designed to equip students with cutting‑edge knowledge and practical skills essential for navigating the complexities of modern shipping and international trade.

Under the leadership of Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe,  LiMA has placed capacity building, professional training, and international partnerships at the heart of its institutional development strategy. The Authority views these scholarships not merely as individual opportunities but as strategic investments in Liberia’s maritime future.

LiMA believes that the advanced training acquired in China will yield dividends far beyond personal achievement. Upon their return, the scholars are expected to strengthen Liberia’s maritime institutions, enhance operational efficiency, and contribute to the nation’s broader economic growth.

This initiative signals Liberia’s unwavering commitment to human capital development and positions the country as a rising force in global maritime affairs.
