A public disagreement between Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon and former Grand Bassa County Senator Jonathan L. Kaipay has exposed tensions within the Liberty Party, raising fresh questions about the party’s internal political maneuvering intensifies ahead of the 2029 elections.
The incident reportedly occurred during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Liberty Party’s headquarters in Buchanan, where Kaipay walked out of the event after an exchange with Senator Dillon.
According to accounts from individuals familiar with the incident, Dillon allegedly described Kaipay as “deceitful” during a face-to-face conversation at the ceremony. The remark reportedly offended the former lawmaker, who viewed it as disrespectful and inappropriate, particularly at an event intended to celebrate the party’s development and unity.
Before leaving the gathering, Kaipay is said to have formally informed Liberty Party Chairman about the incident and expressed his dissatisfaction with Dillon’s comment.
The dispute has drawn attention within political circles, with observers linking the confrontation to broader political calculations within the Liberty Party. Both Kaipay and Grand Bassa County Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence are widely regarded as influential figures with interests tied to the county’s future political landscape, particularly as discussions surrounding the 2029 Grand Bassa County senatorial race begin to emerge.
Senator Dillon is considered a close political ally of Senator Karnga-Lawrence, who is expected by many political observers to seek another term in office. Kaipay, meanwhile, has also been mentioned among potential contenders for the same senatorial seat, fueling speculation that competing political interests may be shaping relationships within the party.
The incident has also revived discussions surrounding Kaipay’s current role as Port Manager. Political commentators have long debated the circumstances surrounding his appointment, with some suggesting that Karnga-Lawrence played a key role in securing the position for him.
However, Kaipee has consistently rejected those claims, maintaining that his appointment resulted from his contributions to President Joseph Boakai’s successful 2023 election campaign.
As debate continues, the Liberty Party has yet to issue an official statement addressing the matter.
The incident underscores the increasingly visible divisions within the party and highlights the political complexities likely to shape the road to the 2029 elections. When contacted via mobile phone, Dillon phone rang endlessly.
