The Government of the People’s Republic of China has awarded two scholarships to the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA), offering selected Liberians the opportunity to pursue advanced maritime studies at Dalian Maritime University.
The scholarships are part of China’s broader international education and cooperation drive, which aims to build technical capacity in partner countries while strengthening bilateral ties. For Liberia, the award comes as the maritime sector seeks to reinforce its human resource base amid growing global competition.
Officials at LiMA welcomed the development but acknowledged that the scale of support—limited to two beneficiaries—highlights both opportunity and constraint within ongoing capacity-building efforts.
Commissioner/CEO Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr. described the scholarships as a timely intervention aligned with the Authority’s institutional priorities. He said the initiative supports efforts to develop a technically skilled workforce capable of sustaining Liberia’s maritime program, one of the country’s most significant revenue-generating sectors.
