Communities in Putu Administrative District, Grand Gedeh County, have welcomed renewed momentum toward restarting the long-stalled Putu iron ore project, while urging government and investors to ensure an inclusive development deal.
In a statement issued by the Putu Contact Group (PCG) Inc., Chief Strategist Philip Bas Kamah II praised President Joseph Nyumah Boakai Sr. and the Government of Liberia for prioritizing the project’s reactivation. He also commended Africa Metallic Resources (AMR) for committing to advance operations with local participation.
The PCG emphasized that the project represents a vital opportunity to generate jobs and accelerate growth in Grand Gedeh and southeastern Liberia. To maximize benefits, the group proposed negotiating a legally binding Community Development Agreement (CDA). Key provisions would include: Community consultation and transparent oversight, a dedicated, audited Community Development Fund, fair benefit-sharing mechanisms, priority employment for local residents, local procurement and business participation, and strong environmental safeguards.
Kamah stressed that the proposals are not intended to delay investment or confront AMR or the government, but to secure long-term social and economic dividends. “Our communities remain united, peaceful, and ready to engage in good-faith negotiations,” the statement noted.
The group called on the government to continue leading the process and on AMR to work toward measurable, funded commitments under the CDA framework.
For residents of Putu, the iron ore project is seen as a potential catalyst for regional transformation. However, they insist that only an inclusive development pact will ensure the mountain’s wealth delivers lasting value for Grand Gedeh County and Liberia as a whole.
