Internal Affairs Minister Francis Nyumalin issued a stern warning to traditional leaders nationwide, cautioning them against involving themselves in activities that contravene the rule of law.
The Minister emphasized the importance of civil matters being handled by local authorities and advised against traditional leaders interfering in disputes between companies such as Arcelor Mittal and affected communities.
Expressing zero tolerance for traditional brush masters who intimidate or disrupt the operations of companies within the country, Minister Nyumalin highlighted the adverse effects of such actions on the nation, its citizens, and investors.
The Minister underscored that such behavior contradicts the government’s civil administration structure.
This cautionary announcement follows a recent confrontation between Arcelor Mittal and residents of mining communities in Nimba County. Traditional brush masters had erected roadblocks, causing disruptions to the company’s operations.
However, negotiations led by Minister Nyumalin successfully resolved the conflict, allowing Arcelor Mittal to resume normal activities in Nimba County.
Under the terms of the negotiated settlement, Arcelor Mittal has committed to immediate road rehabilitation projects in the affected communities. Collaborating with government officials and various agencies, the company aims to address pressing community demands within thirty days.
Minister Nyumalin reaffirmed the government’s dedication to upholding Arcelor Mittal’s concession agreement with the people of Nimba County. He also urged residents to seek peaceful means of conflict resolution, emphasizing the necessity of abiding by the rule of law.
