There are many paths to the presidency in Africa, and former Vice President Joseph Boakai chose one: dancing with the devils and demons along the way. In his quest for the presidency in 2023, Boakai openly declared that he would go to any length, even “working and dancing with the devil,” to achieve his goal.
Now, as Boakai sits in the Executive Mansion, the demons he once embraced have turned against him. The firebrand Representative Yekeh Kolubah, one of the “devils” Boakai said he was transacting business with to win the 2023 election, has become a thorn in the new President’s side.
Kolubah, known for his foul mouth and penchant for instigating violence, was an easy ally for Boakai to cement ties with as he sought to step up his game for the presidency, which in this part of Africa often evokes disorderly conduct. But now, the tables have turned, and Kolubah has set his sights on the new president.
The first family has become the target of Kolubah’s daily barrage of insults, hate speech, bullying, and blackmail. In the process, those who were once Kolubah’s enemies have become his friends and allies, while his former friends, including the president, have become his new enemies.
Kolubah’s persistent criticism of Boakai’s regime has put him at odds with the government’s supporters, leading to public threats from top officials and attempts to tarnish his reputation on social media.
On Monday, the lawmaker’s “base” known for hosting at-risk youths and adults and other supporters was ransacked, looted and teargas by the police. This incident, he directly blamed on President Boakai.
“The Liberia National Police raided my political base in the District early this morning. They brutalized my people and took away cash, television and other valuable items away with them. The Police also shot live bullets and teargas and took away five of my motorbikes from my Base,” Kolubah said.
As Boakai now sits in the seat once occupied by his predecessor, George Weah, the demons he once danced with have turned on him.
“The war President Joseph Boakai has started, I can assure him that we have been at it for six years. Let me say this to Joseph Boakai that no matter what he does, I will continue to stand for the Liberian people and will never compromise the people’s interest.” Said the lawmaker.
Breaking ties with the devil is a daunting task, as Boakai is learning the hard way. The alliances he forged in his pursuit of power have now become a liability, and the demons he once embraced have come back to haunt him.
The lesson for Boakai and other African leaders is clear: the path to power is fraught with pitfalls, and the demons you dance with can ultimately turn against you. Boakai’s story serves as a cautionary tale for those who seek power at all costs, a stark reminder that the price of ambition can be steep and the consequences lasting.
