Must read

In his maiden address to the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai made a strong appeal for immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Palestine conflict, announced Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council, and condemned the use of West Africa as a theater for proxy wars.

President Boakai emphasized Liberia’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals and his administration’s comprehensive “ARREST Agenda” to address the economic and social needs of the Liberian people.

He also highlighted Liberia’s progress in democratic consolidation, rule of law, and transitional justice.

Addressing the global challenges, President Boakai called for collective action to tackle the drug epidemic, climate change, and regional security threats, particularly the growing terrorist activities in West Africa.

He urged the international community to support Liberia’s efforts to establish the War and Economic Crimes Courts to ensure accountability for past human rights violations.

Regarding the Middle East, President Boakai expressed Liberia’s concern over the escalating violence in Israel and Palestine, calling for an immediate ceasefire to provide essential humanitarian relief to civilians. He urged both parties to engage in negotiations towards a lasting peace, including a two-state solution.

On Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council in 2026, President Boakai sought the support of member states, stating that Liberia is prepared to work with the Council to promote peace, justice, and security globally.

The 79-year-old-leader condemned attempts to disintegrate the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), emphasizing Liberia’s resolve to maintain the regional body’s unity and integrity, and to prevent the region from being used for proxy conflicts.
