Liberia: ‘Political Harassment’ CDC Secretary General Charges Boakai

The Secretary General of Liberia’s main opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) Jefferson Tamba Koijee has accused the Joseph Boakai-led administration of engaging in acts that target political actors and ordinary citizens, leading to the loss of lives at the hands of state security forces.

Koijee claimed that the Boakai government has repeatedly infiltrated the CDC headquarters, first under the guise of “confidence patrol” and later with a warrantless  search and seizure raid  resulting in the loss of property and serious injuries to Liberians.

He described these actions as “provocative” and warned that they resemble the undemocratic vices that led to the civil war in the country.

The CDC Secretary General also accused the Boakai administration of “weaponizing the courts” against the CDC and other political stakeholders, manipulating the legal system to evict the main opposition party from its national headquarters. Koijee emphasized that this is “counterproductive and tantamount to fermenting chaos in the country,” and called on international partners to intervene.

Koijee alleged that President Boakai has been deceptive in his commitment to upholding the rule of law and respecting political freedom, as evidenced by the dismissal of Liberians from their jobs due to their political affiliations.

He also accused the government of altering the national budget without the approval of the National Legislature, a move he described as “criminal” and a “brazen disregard for the country’s governance structure.”

Koijee also raised concerns about the Boakai administration’s alleged extravagant spending, including the President’s reported use of a US$100,000 credit card for entertainment purposes, while civil servants struggle to make ends meet.

He also highlighted the government’s off-budget expenditures, including millions of dollars allocated for “unexplained miscellaneous” expenses and covert operations.

The CDC Secretary General also called for a further investigation into the death of Miss Charloe Musu – the teenage daughter of former Chief Justice Gloria Scott whom the state has failed to identify her murderer.

He said those who had previously accused him of masterminding her death are now in power and should investigate the matter thoroughly. On accusation of political harassment, government’s spokesperson have insisted it’s groundless.
