President Joseph Boakai must take immediate action to address widespread corruption plaguing his administration, the Solidarity & Trust for a New Day (STAND), a leading civil society organization in Liberia said in a statement Monday.
STAND has called for an urgent cabinet reshuffle and the swift prosecution of officials implicated in corruption, warning that any delay or failure to act decisively could lead to a complete government collapse, leaving millions of struggling citizens without essential social services.
In a statement shared with the Oracle News Daily STAND said ongoing corruption crisis has severely eroded public trust and reached a critical juncture that demands urgent intervention to prevent further deterioration.
The nation’s political leaders appear to lack a sense of historical awareness, having seemingly forgotten the devastating consequences of corruption, human rights violations, and economic inequality that fueled the 14-year civil war in Liberia, STAND Chairman Mulbah Morlu said.
He urged President Boakai to demonstrate bold leadership by surrounding himself with principled and competent technocrats who prioritize the nation’s long-term welfare over political expediency.
The organization emphasized the urgent need for swift and impartial investigations into all allegations of corruption, with the understanding that all accused individuals must be held accountable, regardless of their political, religious, or ethnic affiliations.
STAND warned that Liberia is at a critical crossroads, where corruption, internal divisions, underperformance, and economic mismanagement are undermining the Boakai administration’s capacity to deliver essential services, pushing millions of Liberians deeper into poverty and despair.
The organization asserted that without decisive action to replace compromised officials and restore integrity within the government, further alienation from the citizens is dangerously unavoidable.
Addressing the economic challenges facing the country, STAND expressed concerns about the government’s economic policies, which appear to favor foreign interests over the needs of the local market and ordinary Liberian citizens.
The organization called for a reorientation of governance that prioritizes the upliftment of hardworking Liberians, from shopkeepers to civil servants, and champions policies that genuinely address the needs of the people.
