In a compelling op-ed published Monday, U.S. Ambassador to Liberia Mark Toner issued a stark warning to those contemplating illegal immigration to the United States.
As immigration enforcement intensifies under the Trump Administration, Ambassador Toner outlined the severe penalties awaiting individuals who attempt to enter the U.S. unlawfully, including jail time, deportation, and long-term bans on re-entering the country.
“The journey to the U.S. southern border is fraught with danger,” the Ambassador wrote, illustrating the risks associated with illegal crossings, which not only expose potential migrants to violent criminal organizations but can also lead to tragic outcomes, including loss of life.
“The plain truth is,” he stated, “that trying to sneak into the United States is not a viable option, as the chances of getting caught continue to rise dramatically.”
Toner referenced the stark statistics, indicating a remarkable 94 percent decrease in illegal border crossings since last year and a staggering 627 percent increase in arrests of those who crossed illegally after entering the U.S. “If you try to cross a U.S. border or remain in the United States illegally, you will be caught, detained, and sent back,” he warned.

The op-ed highlights the escalating consequences of visa fraud, which Ambassador Toner noted has serious repercussions, including criminal prosecution. Liberians, in particular, face a challenging visa landscape, with nearly 20 percent overstaying their tourist visas, making Liberia the tenth highest for visa overstays globally.
The Ambassador urged those who have family or friends living in the U.S. illegally to encourage them to return home, emphasizing that now is the time to act.
Reflecting on U.S. immigration policy, Toner underscored that accountability extends beyond the individuals attempting to migrate. The U.S. government is cracking down on those who facilitate illegal immigration, including smugglers and corrupt foreign officials. This includes new restrictions imposed on officials who fail to curtail illegal immigration, marking a comprehensive approach to immigration reform.
“The risks of trying to illegally immigrate to the United States far outweigh any potential benefits,” he cautioned, summarizing the gravity of the situation. “You could lose your life, become a victim of criminals, or end up with a record that damages your future and your family’s future.”
Ambassador Toner concluded with a clear message: adherence to U.S. immigration laws is the safest and most secure path forward. As enforcement intensifies, he urged Liberians to prioritize safety, family, and their long-term futures over the uncertainty and peril associated with illegal immigration.
