From Zero to Heroes: ArcelorMittal Liberia Employs Over 230 Young Liberians

ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) has formally welcomed 236 young Liberians into its workforce, marking a new chapter in the company’s local empowerment and industrial growth strategy. The new hires—comprising 128 graduates of the ArcelorMittal Liberia Training Academy and 108 Process Operator Learners—were recognized for completing rigorous training programs, qualifying them to take on key roles in the company’s expanding operations, including the construction and commissioning of a massive iron ore concentrator.

The high-level event was graced by ArcelorMittal’s Global Vice President and Chief Executive Officer for Mining, Mr. Kleber Silva, who traveled to Liberia to personally commend the new employees and celebrate their achievements. In an emotional keynote address, Mr. Silva underscored the strategic importance of Liberian talent in driving the company’s growth and helping to transform the country’s mining sector.

“I’m really very proud and very happy to be with you here,” Silva said. “To be part of this moment of achievement, and that you now join us at this great mine, at this great investment. It’s really a very important moment for all of us, for all of you. ”Silva passionately described the newly recruited young Liberians as a vital part of what he called an “unbeatable combination”—human capacity and vast mineral resources—capable of reshaping Liberia’s future. “What you have learned here is precious and will make this company better and better,” he noted. “This amazing Tocadero-Danglo-Willington body with 5.5 billion tons of ore is ready to transform Liberia and help the great people. But we need you—those who can value this resource, those who can transform the mining industry.

”Reflecting on his 37-year career in mining, Silva emphasized the immense opportunity that lies ahead for the young workers, urging them to embrace the journey with passion and a sense of purpose. “This is just the beginning of this infinite journey to transform our lives, our country, our company, and the world. A very warm welcome to all of you in this marvelous journey where each day a dream comes true,” he said.

Joining Mr. Silva at the event was Mr. Anthony P. Kochen, ArcelorMittal Liberia’s Chief Operating Officer, who officially welcomed the trainees into the company. Kochen described the graduates as the future of AML’s operations and Liberia’s mining sector.

“What I see when I look around this room is the future of this operation and this country. You are highly skilled operators and qualified artisans—and we are very proud to receive and welcome you into the ArcelorMittal family,” he said.

Kochen commended the energy and enthusiasm already being exhibited by the young Liberians, many of whom have begun working on site at the concentrator. “The phones have been ringing with positive responses about the work you’ve already started. Your energy and enthusiasm are already being felt. We thank you for having faith in us—and we also have faith in you,” he added.

The recognition ceremony, held at the foothills of Mount Nimba, is part of ArcelorMittal Liberia’s ongoing commitment to building local capacity and ensuring Liberians play a central role in the company’s Phase II expansion project, which is one of the largest mining investments currently underway in West Africa.

ArcelorMittal Liberia’s Training Academy continues to serve as a hub for nurturing high-quality local talent, aligned with the company’s broader vision of sustainability, empowerment, and long-term growth in the region.
