The Catholic Bishops Conference of Liberia (CABICOL) and the nation’s Catholic community are united in grief as they mourn the passing of Pope Francis, who died in the early hours of Monday, April 21, 2025.

As news of his death spreads, expressions of sorrow and tributes pour in from believers and leaders alike, reinforcing the profound impact the Pope had on the global Catholic community.

Pope Francis—an emblem of peace, justice, and solidarity—was a beloved figure not only within the Vatican’s walls but also across the globe, resonating deeply in nations like Liberia.

His papacy championed countless social justice initiatives and interfaith dialogues, focusing on bridging societal divides in areas plagued by conflict.

In Liberia, the Pope’s commitment to peace-building initiatives left a significant mark, especially considering the nation’s tumultuous past, the Bishop Conference said. His compassionate outreach inspired hope and resilience among the Catholic faithful, fostering a renewed sense of community and purpose in a land striving for unity and healing.

In remembrance of Pope Francis, the Catholic Bishops Conference is calling for a period of reflection and prayer, encouraging all dioceses across the country to honor his legacy through actions of compassion and solidarity.

Notably, Liberia’s President Joseph Boakai issued a heartfelt message of condolence upon receiving the tragic news. In his statement, the President expressed profound sorrow at the loss of a leader who embodied humility and compassion.

He highlighted the Pope’s relentless advocacy for the marginalized and his commitment to social justice, environmental stewardship, and interfaith dialogue.

“I recall with great reverence my audience with His Holiness at the Vatican Apostolic Palace on October 18, 2024,” President Boakai noted.

“Our discussions on global challenges, including migration and social equity, underscored his deep understanding and concern for the issues facing our world today.”

As the Catholic community in Liberia grieves, they also celebrate the enduring legacy of Pope Francis—a legacy that reflects his unwavering commitment to compassion, inclusivity, and the relentless pursuit of the common good.

The President concluded his message wishing for the Pope’s soul to rest in eternal peace, a sentiment that resonates deeply across the faithful in Liberia and beyond.

As tributes continue to flow, the legacy of Pope Francis remains a guiding light for the Catholic community in Liberia, inspiring them to uphold the values he cherished in their everyday lives.
