Liberian President Joseph Boakai met Thursday with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace in Paris to press for French support as Liberia, a current non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council seeks chairmanships of sanctions committees and to deepen bilateral cooperation.

The leaders discussed Liberia–France relations, development partnerships and Liberia’s international role, a statement on the Liberian presidency Facebook page said.

Boakai urged Macron to champion Liberia’s nomination to serve as chair and co-chair of four UN Security Council sanctions committees when the matter is taken up at the level of the P5 — the Council’s five permanent members.

Boakai also underscored Liberia’s historic ties to the United Nations, noting his country’s status as an early signatory to the UN Charter and saying Liberia has not yet served a full term on the Security Council. He framed the current non-permanent seat as both symbolic and strategic for the country’s global engagement.

Both presidents highlighted the importance of translating high level dialogue into concrete action through technical cooperation and agreed follow up mechanisms.

Boakai reiterated his government’s focus on inclusive growth and pointed to initiatives aimed at empowering women and persons with disabilities as central to Liberia’s development agenda.

In a show of mutual goodwill, Boakai extended an invitation to President Macron for a state visit to Liberia; Macron accepted, and both leaders directed their foreign ministries to coordinate modalities and timelines for the visit.
