President Joseph Boakai is in the Guinean capital Conakry with ranking members of his national security council, participating in a high-level regional meeting aimed at defusing escalating tensions along the Liberia–Guinea border in Lofa County.

The summit is expected to bring together President Boakai, Guinean leader Mamadi Doumbouya and Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio to address recent confrontations in the Sorlumba area of Foya District, where local reports say Guinean troops crossed into territory claimed by Liberia.

The discussions are being held under the auspices of the Mano River Union and aim to reinforce peaceful border management and prevent further escalation.

President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire is also expected to attend, signaling broader regional concern over the dispute.

The border corridor linking Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone is a vital trade and transit route, and officials say stability there is essential to local livelihoods and regional cooperation.

President Boakai is traveling with a high-level Liberian delegation that includes:

  • Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Minister of Foreign Affairs
  • Mamaka Bility, Minister of State without Portfolio
  • Samuel Kofi Woods II, National Security Advisor
  • Francis Nyumalin, Minister of Local Government
  • Geraldine Janet George, Minister of National Defense
  • Davidson F. Forleh, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia

Liberian officials said the delegation will engage their regional counterparts in dialogue aimed at preventing further clashes, strengthening communication and reinforcing mechanisms for peaceful border management across the Mano River Union basin.

No formal statements on outcomes were released prior to departure. The meeting in Conakry is expected to focus on de-escalation measures, confidence-building steps and arrangements to monitor and manage the border area.
