Grand Kru County – A simmering land dispute in Upper Sasstown, Grand Kru County, escalated violently on Sunday as armed men reportedly crossed into contested territory, firing gunshots and sending residents fleeing into nearby bushes.
Eyewitnesses alleged that groups from Bolloh Kaykpo and Poe entered the Sasstown side of the disputed land, attempting to intimidate locals. The area, known for its gold deposits, has long been a flashpoint for tension, with mining activities fueling rival claims.
Residents accused Grand Kru County Land Administrator David Togba of involvement and suggested that influential miners from Bolloh may be backing the intruding parties. These allegations remain unverified.
During the confrontation, unidentified gunmen allegedly discharged live rounds, sparking panic across the community. Unconfirmed reports also suggest that individuals may have been forcibly taken during the clashes, though details remain unclear.
In response, Grand Kru County Administrative Officer Alphonso D.N. Teah visited the area in an effort to calm tensions and mediate between the communities. Local authorities have appealed for national government intervention to prevent further escalation.
The dispute threatens to fracture relations between Bolloh and Jlao Statutory Districts, historically regarded as sister communities. Residents warn that the gold-rich land conflict risks undermining decades of cooperation and shared identity.
Frustration is mounting over what many see as the county leadership’s failure to act decisively. Superintendent Antoinette Wowlee Nimely has yet to issue a formal statement, leaving locals anxious about the government’s capacity to contain the unrest.
Community members say the violence underscores broader concerns about land governance and resource management in Liberia’s rural counties. With gold mining increasingly lucrative, disputes over ownership and control have become flashpoints for instability.
As of press time, the situation in Upper Sasstown remains tense, with residents fearful of renewed clashes. Authorities have not confirmed casualties or arrests, and the national government has yet to announce concrete measures.
The unfolding crisis highlights the fragile balance between economic opportunity and communal harmony in resource-rich regions. Without swift intervention, observers warn, the dispute could deepen mistrust and destabilize Grand Kru’s fragile peace.
