The  Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) lit up Monrovia City Hall today with a vibrant celebration of the International Day for Women in Maritime, honoring the trailblazing women who are breaking barriers and charting new courses in one of the world’s most demanding industries.

The colorful ceremony drew government officials, maritime stakeholders, development partners, and female professionals, all united in applauding the achievements of Liberian women whose contributions are reshaping the nation’s maritime landscape.

Delivering the keynote address, Retired General Geraldine George, Liberia’s Minister of National Defense, captivated the audience with her reflections on the global theme: “From Policy to Practice: Advancing Gender for Maritime Excellence.” She hailed Liberian women as pioneers of progress, declaring that “excellence knows no gender.” George urged leaders to intensify efforts to create opportunities for women to thrive, stressing that inclusiveness is not optional but essential for sustainable national development.

Her message resonated with Liberia’s broader aspirations for equal participation and empowerment. She encouraged young women and girls to boldly pursue careers in maritime and other male-dominated professions, insisting that the nation’s future strength lies in their innovation and leadership.

Representing the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR), Mr. Abraham Avi Zaidenberg emphasized Liberia’s global prominence in shipping. He revealed that more than 7,000 vessels currently sail under the Liberian flag, cementing the registry’s reputation as one of the largest and most respected worldwide. He underscored that women’s contributions are vital to sustaining this success story.

Adding to the chorus of support, Mr. Darlington Cheeks, Chief of Office Staff at LiMA, spoke on behalf of Commissioner/CEO Cllr. Neto Lighe Sr. Cheeks highlighted the indispensable role women play in strengthening the maritime sector and reminded the audience that teamwork remains the anchor of both institutional and national achievement.

The celebration was more than ceremonial—it was a powerful reaffirmation of Liberia’s commitment to gender equality in maritime. By honoring women’s achievements and pledging to expand opportunities, LiMA and its partners signaled a bold vision: a maritime industry where women are not passengers but captains of progress.

As applause echoed through City Hall, one message rang clear—Liberia’s women are not just navigating the waves; they are steering the nation toward a stronger, more inclusive future.
