Liberia: Legislature Not Auditable, Auditor General Says

Must read

It will take the General Auditing Commission two years to perform a full scale audit of the national legislature due to the absence of requisite financial system and structure at the premier arm of the Liberian government.

Auditor General Garswa Jackson told House members seeking the possibility of auditing the entity Thursday, a system review will first be carried out to determine the auditability of the legislature, which has not been subject of an audit for more than two decades.

Auditability hinges on obtaining access to the type of information necessary to put together an audit, and the records requested being well-organized, complete, and compliant with accounting standards.

“The new measure will put into place a clear financial system in compliance with various financial policies including the Public Financial Management law and other important financial instruments,” GAC said in a statement shared with the Oracle.

“This will be aided by the General Auditing Commission Follow- Up Unit comprising qualified auditors accompanied by a periodically reviewed. The AG then disclosed that within two years, the Legislature will be comprehensively audited by the General Auditing Commission after these systems are put into place.”
