The National Elections Commission has officially announced the date for the upcoming Senatorial bye election in Nimba County, scheduled for April 22, 2025. The announcement coincides with the commencement of the candidates’ nomination process, which began on March 3, 2025.

Commissioner Barsee Kpangbai, who chairs the Senatorial bye election, confirmed that five candidates have already begun the nomination process. Among these, three candidates are representing political parties, while two are running as independents. The commission has noted a rising interest from additional candidates wishing to enter the race.

In a statement regarding logistical preparations, Commissioner Kpangbai revealed that discussions between the NEC and the Ministry of Finance Development and Planning have reached a critical stage, with 99.9% of the budgetary allocation for the election agreed upon. However, he did not disclose the total budget amount for this electoral process.

On March 21, 2025, the NEC plans to launch a Civil Voter Education campaign across Nimba County to ensure comprehensive voter engagement, aiming to reach out to all 397,256 registered voters across the nine electoral districts in the county.

The bye election was called to fill the vacancy left by the late Prince Y. Johnson, who previously occupied the Senate seat for nearly two decades.
