Across civilizations, ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก has always been reveredโbut nowhere is its nature more deeply understood than in ๐๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก๐ญ. They also invite mortals who would converse with them to speak likewise: in truth.
Yet because truth can be too fierce for mortal hearts to bear, the gods coat it in sweetness before giving it to humanity.
That sweetness is called proverbs.
Proverbs are ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฌ๐๐จ๐ฆ ๐จ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ฌ, the honey of divine truth rendered in human words.
Whenever elders meet, they greet one another with proverbsโor soon afterwards, they offer one.
Not as ceremony
Proverbs are the honey-dipped “cojologbo,” which enables the bitter herb to be swallowed.
To speak in proverbs is to acknowledge that
Among the Kpelleh people, it is said that the ๐๐ง๐๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ ๐จ๐๐ฌ ๐๐ฐ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐๐ฅ๐ฆ ๐จ๐ ๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก, a sacred sphere accessible only to the dead.
Ordinary mortals can not enter it.
Only the Jzoeโthe Kpelleh high priestโmay ritually approach that realm in times of deep crisis.
For the living,
This is why councils, assemblies, and family gatherings traditionally begin with proverbs:
to remind everyone that
The ear that refuses to hear advice will be buried with the head when it is chopped off.โ
โThe tongue is quick to speak, ignoring the ears that wish to first hear.โ
These are not mere sayings.
They are ๐๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐๐๐ฅ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐๐ฌโguiding people of all cultures and faiths toward humility, listening, harmony, and humanity.
To speak in proverbs is to continue ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฏ๐จ๐ข๐๐ ๐จ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ง๐๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ, ensuring that truthโhowever sharpโremains sweet enough to heal the wounds of the heart.
