Authorities in Gbarpolu County have shut down an illegal mining site in Henry Town following an inspection by officials of the Ministry of Mines and Energy. The operation was carried out to strengthen monitoring activities in mining communities.
Minister of Mines and Energy Hon. R. MatenokayTingban and members of his team arrived in Bopolu City on Sunday evening, May 24, 2026, as part of efforts to address illegal mining in the county.
During the operation in Henry Town, Inspector General of Mines Agatitu B. Coker and Director General of Mines AlwellCarr led an inspection team to the mining area in Koningia Chiefdom, Bopolu District.
Officials reported that more than 40 Burkinabe nationals attacked members of the inspection team during the late-night operation.
Authorities said the situation created fear and concern within the mining community.
According to officials, the group had allegedly been operating at the site illegally for more than six months without proper trade records or resident permits.
Authorities also reported that more than 100 Burkinabe nationals are currently living in the Henry Town mining district.
Several individuals were arrested during the operation, including mining site supervisor Abraham Tallaweh.
Authorities say investigations are continuing as security officers review activities at the site.
Officials confirmed that all mining activities in the area have been stopped under a full closure order.
Community members said the action is intended to restore order and ensure mining regulations are followed.
Residents in the area have expressed concern about the impact illegal mining can have on local development, safety, and environmental protection.
Some community members are hopeful that stronger monitoring will improve conditions in the district.
Meanwhile, the ministry’s team also intercepted a truck carrying ‘katakata’ equipment on its way to Belle Yealla in Belle District.
Authorities described the machine as equipment commonly used in mining operations.
Local residents say they hope continued inspections and cooperation between communities and authorities will help create a safer and more organized mining sector in Gbarpolu County.
