Liberia’s maritime program administrated by the Liberian International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR), has become the first ever registry to reach 300 million gross tonnage. As of 8 June, the Liberian-flagged fleet stood at 307.3 million gt, according to Clarksons.
In June 2023, Liberia overtook Panama as the world’s largest ship registry in gross tonnage with 246.5 million gt, a position held by the Latin American country since 1993.
The Liberian Ship Registry accounts for 17% of the global fleet with 6,092 vessels under its flag, according to IHS. In the past two years, the Registry has seen an increase of newbuildings flagging, leading to represent 28% of the global newbuilding gross tonnage.
It has posted a dynamic 9.3 % growth from June 2025 to the present month of June.
“This milestone belongs to every member of the Registry’s team. Our people, across every office, in every time zone, in every discipline, show up every single day with a commitment to our clients and to the standards that make this registry what it is,” said Alfonso Castillero, CEO of the Liberian International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR).
“Behind every gross tonne is a vessel, and behind every vessel is a shipowner who chose to trust us. That trust is something we never take for granted, and it is the team that earns it, day after day.”
