Must read

A multilateral engagement on energy development that encompasses the European Union, the European Investment Bank, the African Development Bank, and the Government of Liberia has led to the  launch of a fresh round of  the Liberia Energy Efficiency and Access Project (LEEAP).

This initiative aims to enhance electricity access, improve energy efficiency, and bolster human and institutional capacity within Liberia’s electricity sector.

The commissioning of LEEAP reflects a strong commitment to sustainable energy solutions and reliable electricity accessibility for the Liberian populace. Among the notable achievements of the project are:

Expanded Access: Over 39,792 new customers connected, including 50 health facilities, 65 academic institutions, and 250 small businesses.

Infrastructure Development: Construction of 45km of double circuit transmission lines and new substations, alongside the expansion of 980km of distribution networks across key corridors.

Economic Impact: Creation of over 6,000 jobs, with nearly 22% female participation, decreased crime rates due to improved street lighting, and strengthened community engagement.

Capacity Building: Training for over 110 staff from various governmental and educational institutions to enhance operational efficiency.

EU Ambassador Nona Deprez emphasized the significance of the EU’s EUR 107 million investment, stating it would play a key role in combating climate change, reducing energy costs, and driving productive investments in Liberia. EU Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Síkela highlighted the project’s role in supporting sustainable development.

Vice President Jeremiah Koung expressed gratitude to the EU and partners while urging communities to contribute to electricity payments to ensure the project’s viability. LEC Interim Managing Director Thomas Z. Gonkerwon reinforced LEEAP’s transformative impact on Liberia’s energy landscape, pledging further enhancements in energy access and infrastructure development.
