Liberia: Boakai Establishes Task Force to Mitigate U.S. Sanction Risks

Must read

President Joseph  Boakai has announced the formation of a Presidential Task Force to tackle critical governance issues highlighted by U.S. authorities.

This initiative follows warnings indicating that failure to comply with certain benchmarks could lead to travel restrictions affecting Liberians.

Chaired by President Boakai and co-chaired by Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Task Force convened its first meeting on June 17, 2025, at the Executive Mansion.

The creation of this high-level group reflects the administration’s urgency in responding to a recent U.S. State Department memo that set a 60-day compliance deadline for Liberia, alongside 24 other countries.

The Task Force will include representatives from key ministries such as Foreign Affairs, Justice, Health, and the Office of the National Security Advisor, and aims to develop a comprehensive action plan to address the concerns raised by the U.S. Regarding inadequate civil registry systems, government fraud, and concerns over visa overstays, the Task Force’s mission is to ensure progress on pressing issues that might jeopardize Liberians’ travel opportunities.

During the inaugural meeting, President Boakai underscored the administration’s commitment to good governance and the rule of law. “We must take these concerns seriously to protect our citizens and our international relations,” he affirmed.

The urgency of the situation is compounded by the anxiety felt among Liberians, many of whom depend on travel to the U.S. for education, business, family reunification, and medical purposes.

Under the U.S. directive, Liberia must submit an initial action plan by 8 a.m. on Wednesday, with the full compliance period concluding in mid-August. Failure to demonstrate tangible progress could result in partial or complete visa bans for Liberian nationals.

The President’s Task Force is committed to working closely with U.S. authorities to ensure accountability and measurable results are at the forefront of their initiatives.
